Photo Accession #72-017-0086 5x8 glass negative By C.W.J. Johnson circa 1885 This photo by C. W. J. Johnson shows the Carmel Mission, the second of the California missions, founded by Father Junipero Serra on June 3, 1770. This view shows the new peaked roof that Father Angelo Casanova had put on in 1884. Carmel Bay and Point Lobos can be seen in the distance. We also have photographs of all of the other 21. California Missions from the 1860's-1990's. Sir Harry Downie of Carmel has brought back the original appearance of Carmel Mission in 1936. |
