This photo by C. W. J. Johnson shows the Carmel Mission, the second of the California missions, founded by Father Junipero Serra on June 3, 1770. This view shows the new peaked roof that Father Angelo Casanova had put on in 1884. Carmel Bay and Point Lobos can be seen in the distance. We also have photographs of all of the other 21. California Missions from the 1860's-1990's. Sir Harry Downie of Carmel has brought back the original appearance of Carmel Mission in 1936. Aerial view of Carmel Mission and Mission Ranch. Jo Mora sculptor working on the Serra Memorial Cenotaph at the invitation of Father Ramon Mestres, in 1924. Holdings: over 620 photos of Carmel Mission. And the restoration work done by Harry Downie. As well a photos of the City of Carmel 1880-1929, Carmel Valley and photos of Point Lobos. Holdings: over 21,500 photos of Monterey County listed in our database.
